A personal tribute my first Captain Pinku da( Rajnesh Sarma)

Image
At our ancestral house in Tezpur, every year during the Durga Puja, we will invariably find Pinku da, quietly watching the evening Aarti, from the far end, wearing a neat attire. An opportunity to stand beside him and share all my adventures of last one year is what I look forward to. An acknowledgement, a smile or a word of compliment from him, makes me super happy. So, every puja I always used to look up for those rare moments. Pinku da, was probably the first person in my life whom I started admiring. When I was around 8-9 years old, he was the captain of the Kolibari Cricket Club and during those days my only goal in life, was to earn a place in KCC team, even if it is the 12 th  man. So, I always try to do good deeds, so that I can be in good books of Pinku da. He was like a walking encyclopedia of the world news. In absence of google or internet, our only window to interesting facts happening across the world was through Pinku da. After the practice sessions are over, Pinku d...

All about life in Sainik School Goalpara and Dreams !

"A lambu, ettna jada khana khata hai, phir  v cross country race may 431 position atta hai’ .…It was hard to escape from the witty humour of Mr. B K Sonowal sir!  But that’s when I realized only jada khana is not enough to be a champion in our school, you need to have the josh and confidence to overcome all odds.  Within one month of joining Sainik School Goalpara I wrote more than a dozen letters to my parents, sometime drawing my tear full face, requesting them to take me away from the school.  For one month I cried, I played sports. Again I cried, I played sports. But after two months I only played sports and never cried again. My friends and their friendship became everything for me. After reaching class VIII, I suddenly found my jumping and hitting ability improved.  I wondered how I could improve so quickly just by practicing  few minutes a day. Later, I found the answer to my sudden improvement lies in our “Reading room” (the big dormitories where ju...

Dubai Diary and the two substitution!!

Image
The entire stretch of the road visible from our hotel balcony at central Dubai was filled with bumper-to-bumper traffic. All  the passenger in their luxury cars were sitting on rooftop playing Arabic music, pumping foams and waving their National flag. It was a moment one can witness once in a lifetime. In fraction of a seconds everyone  said good bye to one century and welcomed a  new century. The locals were celebrating  the turn of a new century but for us the happiness  was double. Because, inside the hotel room the news channel were breaking the news of release of  hostages of flight  IC-814  from Kandahar,  hijacked  by Taliban. It was 1st of January 2000.  Be it a new year, a festival or a birthday, the morning practice session of Indian team has  to go on, even more because there was an important match in the evening with  Tunisia. As usual the volleyball indoor hall at Al Shabab sports club was filled with spectat...

Hats off to all mothers

When my wife’s four days official trip was NOT cancelled unlike the unfortunate husband of Seagram Imperial Blue soda ad (men will be men), I thought myself to be lucky. But, never in my wildest imagination thought Piyus Pandey’s portrayal of lucky husband has serious fault. Please allow me 3 min to justify?   I forgot which day of the week it was, but definitely not a weekend, as my IV std daughter was to reach school on time. When the alarm bell rang for the first time, I started pushing Rithvi urging her to wake up and brush her teeth. For the next 15 minute the alarm kept on snoozing and I continued the same sequence, thinking that she will wake up on her own, brush her teeth, sharpen her pencils, pack her bag, fill up her water bottle, have milk, eat her breakfast, press her uniform, wear her shoes, comb her hair, prepare her tiffin, and wake me up to drop her in the school. Because all these months I have been doing the last duty of dropping her at school without fail. B...

BVL Story 4 "The story of vanishing soap and what next in BVL "

I am a product of 90’s and I am also a product of Sainik School Goalpara.  So I justify, using the lifebuoy soap for both body wash and shampoo. Collectively me and my batch mates  also justify sharing that same lifebuoy soap irrespective of our  skin quality and  number of scratching & itching each one of us were used to, before going on a  sound sleep at night.   At times, while taking bath when a senior arrives near the hand pump, we obviously have to make way for him. Waiting for our turn and rubbing the lifebuoy soap, I always used to go to my own dream world. That’s when the foam takes all the liberty to dry down and settle on our body.  But then again we were born fighters so we keep the foam floating with our hands,  till our turn comes to go below the RO water (Read Red Oxide). Thanks to the Gamusa filter tied across the outlet of the hand pump, the golden colour iron coated water turns slightly light brown.  As the filter...

Why we need an alternate platform:  Ever since Akash was 10 years old, he dreamt of becoming a volleyball player. He used to practice with his elders but their village team hardly gets an opportunity to play in tournaments. Only when Akash became 15 years old he for the first time got selected to represent the district team in the sub-Junior inter district championship. But unfortunately his district team lost both the matches. Despite, being a talented player Akash did not get noticed. After 5 years of toiling with the ball and fantasizing of wearing the state jersey he got only two chances to prove his potential. Slowly he lost interest in the game and got attracted in other teenage amusements. Like Akash, there were hundreds of other players who left sports because of lack of a platform to display their talent. For all those children who are good in academics, school provide a platform to take care of their intellectual pursuit but what about other children who are gifted w...
